The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF, obs. code: I41), was an astronomical survey using a wide-field survey camera designed to search for optical transient and variable sources such as variable stars, supernovae, asteroids and comets. The project completed commissioning in summer 2009, and continued until December 2012. It has since been succeeded by the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF), which itself transitioned to the Zwicky Transient Facility in 2017/18. All three surveys are registered at the MPC under the same observatory code for their astrometric observations.

A settembre 2017 è stata scoperta iPTF14hls, una supernova esplosa più volte negli anni precedenti l'osservazione. (it)

Ha permesso inoltre di definire una nuova classe di supernove superluminose. A settembre 2017 è stata scoperta iPTF14hls, una supernova esplosa più volte negli anni precedenti l'osservazione. Nel 2018 l'indagine è cessata a favore della Zwicky Transient Facility, che si è avvalsa del medesimo telescopio integrato da una fotocamera avanzata progettata per indagini ad ampio campo avente come obiettivi eventi transienti quali supernove, lampi gamma, collisioni di stelle estremamente massive e dedicando nel contempo parte delle sue osservazioni al rilevamento dei corpi celesti minori del sistema solare.
