Es troba entre la i la , a l'oest del Parc Nacional d'Acàdia. Administrativamente, la bahía y las áreas próximas pertenecen al estado de Maine. Hay muchas islas en esta bahía, algunas de ellas las colonias de verano más conocidas del país. The bay originates from the mouth of Maine's Penobscot River, downriver from Belfast. Penobscot Bay has many working waterfronts including Rockland, Rockport, and Stonington, and Belfast upriver. Penobscot Bay is between Muscongus Bay and Blue Hill Bay, just west of Acadia National Park. There are many islands in this bay, and on them, some of the country's most well-known summer colonies. - La baia di Penobscot è uno specchio di mare formatosi nell'Olocene dall'estuario dell'omonimo fiume, quando circa 11000 anni fa il livello marino del golfo del Maine si abbassò di 55 m rispetto all'attuale. La baia è quindi la continuazione del fiume, che serpeggiava attraversando un'ampia pianura che si estendeva allora fino all'attuale isola Matinicus. (it)
