Perceforest or Le Roman de Perceforest is an anonymous prose chivalric romance, written in French around 1340, with lyrical interludes of poetry, that describes a fictional origin of Great Britain and provides an original genesis of the Arthurian world. The lengthy work in six books takes its inspiration from the works of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wace, Orosius and Bede, the Lancelot-Grail cycle, the Alexander Romance genre, Roman historians, medieval travellers, and oral tradition. Perceforest forms a late addition to the collection of narratives with loose connections both to the Arthurian Romance and the feats of Alexander the Great.

- Perceforest è un romanzo cavalleresco in prosa francese con alcuni interludi lirici, redatto nei Paesi Bassi durante il XIV secolo. L'opera si articola in sei volumi la cui narrazione si connette sia al ciclo arturiano che alle imprese di Alessandro Magno: viene infatti raccontata un'origine fittizia della Gran Bretagna dove, dall'unione tra troiani e greci, nasce la dinastia di Re Artù. L'autore dell'opera è sconosciuto, ma si ritene che possa essere stato un chierico il quale avrebbe scritto Perceforest su richiesta del conte Guglielmo I di Hainaut. (it)

C'est le manuscrit C, copié par David Aubert aux alentours de 1459-1460 pour Philippe le Bon, Duc de Bourgogne, qui nous permet d'avoir accès à la totalité de l'œuvre. Ce roman montre l'édification de la civilisation ainsi que l'instauration d'une religion monothéiste préfigurant le christianisme. L'établissement de la chevalerie et la religion unique du « Dieu Souverain » sont deux moteurs essentiels du texte. Ce roman tardif se veut une genèse des romans arthuriens puisqu'il nous donne à voir les ancêtres supposés du Roi Arthur et de ses chevaliers. Roman fleuve, il est composé d'environ 531 chapitres. Il entrelace tour à tour emprunts, pièces lyriques et passages narratifs. (fr)
