  • Philippe G. Ciarlet (* 14. Oktober 1938 in Paris) ist ein französischer Mathematiker, der sich mit Numerischer Mathematik und Anwendungen in der Mechanik beschäftigt. Ciarlet studierte 1959 bis 1961 an der École polytechnique und 1962 bis 1964 an der École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. Ab 1964 war er am Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, wo er bei Richard S. Varga promoviert wurde (Variational Methods for nonlinear boundary value problems). 1971 folgte eine Thèse d´Etat (erweiterte Promotion) bei Jacques-Louis Lions an der Universität Paris. 1966 bis 1973 war er Leiter der Abteilung Mathematik im Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées. Ab 1974 war er Professor an der Universität Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie), wo er 1981 bis 1992 Leiter des Labors für Numerische Analysis (de)

Após graduar-se pela École Polytechnique e École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, em Paris, obteve o doutorado na Case Western Reserve University de Cleveland, em 1966, com a tese Variational Methods for Non-Linear Boundary-Value Problems, sob orientação de Richard Steven Varga.
