He worked for Ate de Gavere, a socialist, and this led Hiemstra to also become a socialist. Born in Húns to a farming family, Hiemstra hoped to become a schoolteacher, but could not afford the training, and so worked as a cook, then as an apprentice painter, but at the age of 14, he switched to farm work. He worked for Ate de Gavere, a socialist, and this led Hiemstra to also become a socialist. He then spent some time working in Germany, and in the Dutch military, gradually moving into dairy work, and then becoming a cheese maker. Hiemstra was an early member of the Union of Dairy Workers, and in 1904, he became its president, working nearly full-time for the union from 1905. In 1908, the union affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV), and the following year, Hiemstra took it into a merger with the New Dutch Agricultural Workers' Union, forming the Federation of Agricultural and Dairy Workers. He became the union's secretary, then from 1912 was its president and editor of its journal, Vereenigt U. Hiemstra also joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP), and later became the chair of its Leeuwarden executive. However, he argued that the trade union movement should maintain its distance from the SDAP. He was elected to the Leeuwarden municipal council in 1912, and the Frisian States in 1913. Under Hiemstra's leadership, the union grew, and in 1920, it organised a conference which led to the formation of the International Landworkers' Federation (ILF). Hiemstra became its first general secretary, although in 1924 its headquarters were moved to Germany to save on translation costs, and he switched to become vice president. In 1933, the headquarters returned to the Netherlands, and he once again became general secretary. The union's office moved to Utrecht in 1921, and Hiemstra also relocated. The same year, he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he argued for shorter working hours and better benefits for agricultural workers. In 1927, he was elected to the Utrecht provincial council. Hiemstra retired from the House of Representatives and the ILF in 1937, the union in 1938, and the provincial council in 1939. He served as a member of the Senate from 1937 until 1946. (en)

Piet Hiemstra was een zoon van de landarbeider en koster Fedde Jentjes Hiemstra Jz. en Geertje Freerks Mollema Fz. Hij volgde de lagere school in Huins en herhalingsonderwijs, waarna hij diverse landbouwfuncties vervulde, waaronder kok, boerenknecht, melkknecht en kaasmaker. In zijn vrije tijd was hij voorzitter van de , waar hij in 1905 een baan kreeg als redacteur-propagandist. Na een fusie van bonden in 1909 werd dat secretaris-propagandist bij de , waarvan hij van 1912 tot 1938 voorzitter was. In 1920 reisde hij naar Duitsland en Frankrijk om te komen tot samenwerking, wat datzelfde jaar resulteerde in de oprichting in Amsterdam van de Internationale Federatie van Landarbeidersbonden, waarvan Hiemstra secretaris-penningmeester werd, later vice-voorzitter. Hiemstra trouwde in 1902 te Leeuwarden met de dienstbode Minke de Wal, welke in 1933 overleed, en in 1934 hertrouwde hij met de 22 jaar jongere Christofina Louisa ter Brugge. Beide huwelijken bleven kinderloos. Van 1912 tot 1919 was hij lid van de gemeenteraad van Leeuwarden, waar hij in 1917 de eerste sociaaldemocratische bestuurder (wethouder) werd. Daarnaast was hij vanaf 1913 lid van de Provinciale Staten van Friesland. In 1919 zei hij de gemeenteraad en het wethouderschap vaarwel om lid te worden van de Gedeputeerde Staten van Friesland, en zijn provinciale politieke functies zijn hij daarop weer gedag in 1921, toen hij werd verkozen in de Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal en hij naar Utrecht verhuisde. Hij was nog wel lid van de Provinciale Staten van Utrecht (1927-1941) en de gemeenteraad van De Bilt (1927-1931), en uiteindelijk was hij nog lid van de Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal (1937-1946). In beide Kamers was Hiemstra landbouw-woordvoerder van de SDAP-fractie, en kreeg hij de bijnaam De Troelstra van de landarbeiders, maar hij hield zich ook bezig met marine-aangelegenheden. In 1922 interpelleerde hij Minister Charles Ruijs de Beerenbrouck over de wijziging in de aan werkloze in Emmen en in 1926 Minister Jan Kan van Binnenlandse Zaken en Landbouw over de werkloosheid in de noordelijke provincies. Ook in 1932 vormde werkverschaffing het onderwerp van een interpellatie, en in 1929 was dat een marinewerf die gesloten dreigde te worden. (nl)
