A poikilotherm (/ˈpɔɪkələˌθɜːrm, pɔɪˈkɪləˌθɜːrm/) is an animal whose internal temperature varies considerably. Poikilotherms have to survive and adapt to environmental stress. One of the most important stressors is temperature change, which can lead to alterations in membrane lipid order and can cause protein unfolding and denaturation at elevated temperatures. It is the opposite of a homeotherm, an animal which maintains thermal homeostasis. While the term in principle can apply to all organisms, it is generally only applied to animals, and mostly to vertebrates. So suchen viele Reptilien gezielt sonnige oder schattige Plätze auf, einige Reptilien nutzen sogar die Wärmebildung gleichwarmer Arten (Kleptothermie). Haie dagegen steigern ihre Körpertemperatur durch intensive Bewegung. Staatenbildende Insekten, wie Ameisen, Bienen, Hornissen oder Termiten, erzeugen Wärme durch Muskelzittern oder sorgen im Stock beziehungsweise im Bau durch Lüftung oder Flügelschlag für Kühlung. La plupart des organismes poïkilothermes (qui ne contrôlent pas leur température corporelle) sont également ectothermes (c'est-à-dire que leur chaleur corporelle provient de l'extérieur). Par exemple, certains poissons des mers sont ectothermes (incapable d'utiliser leur énergie cellulaire pour augmenter leur température corporelle) mais ne sont pas poïkilothermes car la température de l'eau dans laquelle ils se trouvent ne varie jamais.
