On 28 May 2000, the station’s name was changed to the current name in order to emphasize its proximity to the Babelsberg Media City (Medienstadt), including Babelsberg Studio.

| - Der Bahnhof Potsdam Medienstadt Babelsberg ist ein an der Wetzlarer Bahn gelegener Regionalbahnhof im Osten des Potsdamer Stadtteils Drewitz in der Medienstadt Babelsberg und der Berliner Ortslage Steinstücken. Im Betriebsstellenverzeichnis wird er unter dem Kürzel BDW geführt. Der Bahnhof wurde am 15. Mai 1879 unter dem Namen Drewitz eröffnet. Er war von 1949 bis 1990 im Güterverkehr Grenzübergangsstelle der DDR nach West-Berlin. Zahlreiche Sicherheitseinrichtungen wurden hierzu eingebaut wie besondere Schutzweichen, die ein unberechtigtes Weiterfahren des Lokomotivführers in Richtung Berlin-Wannsee (Amerikanischer Sektor von Berlin) verhindern sollten. Unter diesen Schutzweichen waren auch einige Entgleisungsweichen, die nur über eine Weichenzunge verfügten und den unberechtigt ausfahrenden Zug zum Entgleisen bringen sollten. Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands wurde ein ICE-Anschlusszug von Berlin Zoologischer Garten über Drewitz nach Michendorf eingerichtet, als noch kein Fahrdraht aus westlicher Richtung das Berliner Stadtgebiet erreichte. Am 28. Mai 2000 erfolgte die Umbenennung in den heutigen Namen, um die Lage in der Medienstadt Babelsberg zu betonen. Das Bahnhofsgebäude mit einem Bahnarbeiterwohnhaus und einem Wirtschaftsgebäude steht unter Denkmalschutz. (de)

The station's DS-100 code is BDW and its station’s numerical code is 5013. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 5 station. The station was opened on 15 May 1879 with the name of Drewitz. It was a freight border crossing point from East Germany to West Berlin from 1949 to 1990. Numerous safety devices were installed for this purpose such as special points that would prevent an unauthorized movement of a locomotive towards Berlin-Wannsee in the American sector of Berlin. This meant that some sets of points would cause trains making unauthorized movements to derail. After the reunification of Germany, an ICE connecting train ran from Berlin Zoologischer Garten through Drewitz station to Michendorf as electrification had not been completed on any line from the west to Berlin. On 28 May 2000, the station’s name was changed to the current name in order to emphasize its proximity to the Babelsberg Media City (Medienstadt), including Babelsberg Studio. The entire building is under heritage protection. (en)
