| - Praedecessores Nostros ist eine Enzyklika (Untertitel: Über die Hilfe für Irland) von Papst Pius IX., mit der er am 25. März 1847 einen Aufruf an alle Bischöfe der Welt richtete. Er erflehte für Rom und die Heiligen Stätten ein dreitägiges Gebet und forderte den römischen Klerus zu Spenden auf, damit die Hungersnot in Irland gemildert werden könne. Dabei verwies er auf die Pflichten der Katholischen Kirche und erinnerte die Bischöfe daran, dass sie Väter und Lehrer aller Christen seien, auch sei es von großer Güte, den Brüdern in Irland die Hilfe zu überbringen, damit sie an die Bedürftigen verteilt werden könne. - Praedecessores nostros è la seconda enciclica di papa Pio IX, pubblicata il 25 marzo 1847; essa si discosta dalle altre encicliche che riguardano, per lo più, problemi interni alla Chiesa, perché affronta un drammatico evento già iniziato nel 1845 e che nel 1847 perdurava nella sua gravità: la carestia in Irlanda. È vero che tra le componenti che resero inefficace l'aiuto dell'Inghilterra e del Regno Unito in genere all'Irlanda in quei drammatici avvenimenti fu da molte parti sollevato il dubbio che fu visto come il modo di eliminare la questione irlandese e le lotte che da secoli avevano una componente religiosa. This event is known by many as the 19th century’s greatest natural disaster. Pope Pius IX was born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti on May 13, 1792, in Senigallia, Italy. He studied at the College of Volterra in Tuscany and was ordained as a priest in 1819. Throughout the span of his life, Pius IX served as the director of the Roman hospice of San Michele, Bishop of Imola, and Archbishop of Spoleto. He was made a Cardinal in 1840 and elected Pope in 1846.
