Prunus fenzliana is a species of wild almond native to the Caucasus areas of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan, preferring to grow at 1400-3500 m above sea level. On the basis of morphology it has been long thought to be one of the wild species that contributed to the origin of the cultivated almond (Prunus dulcis). Genetic testing of both nuclear and chloroplast DNA has confirmed that it is the closest relative (and presumed lone ancestor) of Prunus dulcis.

En se basant sur la morphologie et l’habitat, Ladizinsky (1999) proposa de considérer Prunus fenzliana Fritsch. comme l’ancêtre le plus probable de l’amandier cultivé. Une étude génétique est venue en 2010 conforter cette hypothèse. Basée sur 26 marqueurs SSR de nombreux cultivars d’amandier et d’espèce sauvages et cultivées de Prunus, l’étude de Zeinalabedini et al. (2010) apporte des arguments solides pour considérer que Prunus fenzliana, est l'ancêtre des amandiers cultivés Prunus dulcis. (fr)
