Tie li restis 6 jarojn, poste fariĝis monaĥo en Sankta Albano kaj en 1326 ties abato. Li suferis malsanon, tiam nomatan lepro (sed povis esti ankaŭ sifiliso aŭ tuberkulozo) kaj mortis en sia abatejo. Richard litt an einer Krankheit, die zu seiner Zeit für Lepra gehalten wurde (auch wenn es möglicherweise Syphilis, Skrofulose oder Tuberkulose war), was er offensichtlich verschwieg, als er in Avignon durch den Papst zum Abt ernannt wurde.
