The Diocese of Livonia, later Roman Catholic Diocese of Inflanty was a territorial division of the Roman Catholic Church established in 1186 as the Diocese of Üxküll and promoted as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Riga in 1255.

- The Diocese of Livonia, later Roman Catholic Diocese of Inflanty was a territorial division of the Roman Catholic Church established in 1186 as the Diocese of Üxküll and promoted as Metropolitan Archdiocese of Riga in 1255. Re-established after the Livonian War as the Diocese of Wenden by king Stephen Báthory in 1582. After 1621 the diocesan see was relocated to Dünaburg (Daugavpils) in Inflanty Voivodeship (contemporary Latgalia) of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was formed after Vidzeme and present-day Estonia (the western portion of the predecessor Diocese of Wenden) were conquered by Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. The diocese was suppressed in 1798 after the third partition of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. (en)

W wyniku reformacji przestały istnieć biskupstwa katolickie w Inflantach i Kurlandii. Po zwycięskiej wojnie polsko-rosyjskiej 1577-1582 król Stefan Batory postanowił ściślej związać odzyskane tereny z Rzecząpospolitą poprzez erygowanie nowego biskupstwa. W 1582 w Rydze wraz z senatorami postanowił ufundować nową diecezję. Namiestnikiem Inflant mianował biskupa Jerzego Radziwiłła. 1 maja 1585 papież Sykstus V wydał bullę erekcyjną, powołując się na decyzję papieża Grzegorza XIII z 11 maja 1583. Już w latach 30. XVII wieku większość terytorium diecezji odpadła od Polski (pozostały Semigalia i Inflanty polskie), a biskupi rezydowali zazwyczaj poza jej obszarem. Od roku 1685 biskupi inflanccy Mikołaj Popławski i Krzysztof Antoni Szembek zgłaszali pretensje do władzy nad powiatem piltyńskim, stanowiącym zsekularyzowaną pozostałość po domenie biskupa kurlandzkiego. Pretensji tych ostatecznie władze Rzeczypospolitej nie uznały, niemniej jednak niebezpieczeństwo roszczeń biskupów inflanckich wisiało nad powiatem piltyńskim do końca XVIII w. Po I rozbiorze diecezja została zlikwidowana przez Piusa VI w 1783, a jej tereny wcielono do nowo erygowanej archidiecezji mohylewskiej. (pl)
