This view is supported by the omission of incidents and details which, in spite of the altered conditions under which the poem was composed, would naturally have been preserved in any imitation of the Thebaid, while again certain modifications of the version of Statius can hardly be due to the author's invention but point to an ancient origin. Фивы оказываются каким-то инфернальным городом, а его обитатели — завзятыми язычниками. Впрочем, это не делает из жителей Аргоса последовательных христиан. По форме (встречающееся сбивание на , ввод героя с обязательным изложением его происхождения, родства и т. д., доминирующее место описаний) эта книга отражает живучесть традиций жесты. (ru)

Er umfasst gut 10.000 Verse und verarbeitet in paarweise reimenden Achtsilblern die Thebais des antiken lateinischen Autors Statius (1. Jahrhundert n. Chr.), ein Epos um das tragische Schicksal von Ödipus und seiner Familie, insbesondere der Zwillingssöhne Eteokles und Polyneikes, die sich beim Kampf um die Herrschaft in Theben am Ende gegenseitig erschlagen. Das für ein überwiegend höfisches Publikum verfasste Werk zeigt noch viele Stilmittel der zeitgenössischen Chansons de geste, nimmt aber auch schon solche des höfischen Romans vorweg. Anders als die nach ihm entstandenen Antiken-Romane gewährt es dem Thema Liebe noch relativ geringen Raum. (de)

- The Romance of Thebes (Le Roman de Thèbes) is a poem of some 10,000 lines that appears to be based on an abridged version of the Thebaid of Statius. This view is supported by the omission of incidents and details which, in spite of the altered conditions under which the poem was composed, would naturally have been preserved in any imitation of the Thebaid, while again certain modifications of the version of Statius can hardly be due to the author's invention but point to an ancient origin. As in other poems of the same kind, the marvellous disappears; the Greeks adopt the French methods of warfare and the French code of chivalric love. The Roman dates from the 12th century (c. 1150-55), and is written, not in the tirades of the chansons de geste, but in octosyllabic rhymed couplets. It was once attributed to Benoît de Sainte-Maure; but all that can be said is that the Thebes is prior to the Roman de Troie, of which Benoît was undoubtedly the author. The Thebes is preserved also in several French prose redactions, the first of which, printed in the 16th century under the name of Edipus, belongs to the early years of the 13th century, and originally formed part of a compilation of ancient history, Histoire ancienne jusqu'à Caesar. The first volume of Les histoires de Paul Crose traduites en français contains a free and amplified version of the Thebes. (en)

В романе большое место занимают описания празднеств и турниров, а также любовных взаимоотношений героев, особенно двух пар — Партенопея и Антигоны, Атиса и Исмены. Но любовная интрига не является в романе двигателем сюжета. Кроме того, любовь изображается здесь как внезапно нахлынувшее чувство, оно не знает сомнений и колебаний, оно всегда взаимно и поражает обоих влюбленных сразу. Их диалоги лишены динамизма и скорее напоминают монологи, никак не продвигающие действие вперёд. Мотив совершения подвига во имя дамы здесь ещё недостаточно выявлен. Как и другие романы 50-х годов[уточнить], «Роман о Фивах» — произведение переходное, вернее, подготавливающее следующий этап развития романа. Оно очень типично как попытка приспособить античный сюжет для нужд своего времени, перелицевать его в духе идеологических представлений эпохи. Феодальная терминология встречается в «Романе о Фивах» на каждом шагу. Она проявляется не только в описании осад и поединков, особенностей замкового быта или деталей вооружения. Сознание героев — это сознание феодальное. Оно пронизано представлениями о вассальном долге, правах сюзерена и т. д. Нельзя также не отметить стремления вычленить из общего контекста повествования в известной мере дискретные любовные интриги, что явилось весьма продуктивным новшеством. (ru)
