Spelarna i samma grupp kontrollerar istället varandra – man är varandras markör. Golfreglerna är relativt komplicerade jämfört med andra sporter eftersom man spelar utomhus nära djur och natur. It also prescribes specific penalties that may be enacted in certain situations and for rule infractions. I Sverige är högsta instans för tolkning av golfreglerna Svenska Golfförbundets Regelkommitté. Golfreglerna ska baseras på rättvisa. En grundprincip som står på omslaget till regelboken är: Spela bollen som den ligger och spela banan som den är, men om ingetdera är möjligt, gör det som är rättvist.
