A screw extractor is a tool for removing broken or seized screws. There are two types: one has a spiral flute structure, commonly called an easy out after the trademarked name EZ-Out; the other has a straight flute structure. Screw extractors are intentionally made of hard, brittle steel, and, if too much torque is applied, can break off inside the screw that is being removed.

Конструкция данного инструмента довольно проста и не имеет сложностей. Внешне он похож на стальной стержень на конце которого имеется левая резьба или же клин. Встречается два типа выверток: спиральные и квадратные. Спиральные вывертки похожи на саморезы с обратной резьбой. Попытка вкрутить их в торец сломанного шлица винта приводит к вкручиванию твердого закалённого инструмента в винт, при этом на сам винт действует откручивающее усилие. Для качественной работы вывертки в винте намечают глухое отверстие, в которое будет входить резьба вывертки. Квадратные вывертки отличаются от спиральных только принципом зацепления острыми гранями.
