- Admiral Segismundo Bermejo y Merelo (9 March 1832, San Fernando – 2 December 1899, Madrid) was a Spanish naval officer who served as chief of staff in the Spanish Navy and Minister of the Navy during the Spanish–American War. He was most notable for his role in dispatching Rear Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete, in command of a squadron of four cruisers and three destroyers, to Cuba in May 1898. It set up the conditions for the naval Battle of Santiago de Cuba. Bermejo himself was forced to resign as naval minister after the defeat of the Spanish Pacific Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay by the U.S. Navy, and he died a year later. (en)

Sota el seu mandat es va produir el desastre naval de Cavite, després del qual va ser substituït per Ramón Auñón y Villalón, al maig de 1898. Es tractava d'un home que parlava diferents idiomes i que va exercir com a escriptor, amb obres en la seva haver-hi com la novel·la de ciència-ficció El doctor Juan Pérez o Faï, escrita en alemany. Als die Nachricht vom Sieg des Kommodore George Dewey gegen Admiral Montojos Flotte in der Schlacht von Manila Bay am 1. Mai die Karibik erreichte, gerieten die spanischen Offiziellen in Panik. Volksaufstände in Madrid erzwangen Bermejos Entlassung am 16. Mai 1898. (de)
