Shugodai (守護代, shugodai) were officials during feudal Japan. Shugodai were representatives of provincial shugo when the shugo could not exercise his power, being often away from his province. Unlike shugo, who were appointed from the central power, shugodai were locally appointed.

However, taking advantage of the weakening of their Shugo due to war or other circumstance, some shugodai became the effective lords of their provinces. Col tempo, le famiglie degli shugo si divisero in più rami e i loro patrimoni si frantumarono in proprietà sempre più piccole che vennero affidate a vassalli. Intorno al XIII secolo, la rete di vassalli cominciò a rispondere militarmente e a prestare obbedienza non più allo shogun bensì allo shugodai, che meglio poteva garantire loro protezione e appoggio.
