Au moment où la mode est au flower power, hymnes hippies et arrangements complexes, les Kinks, et en particulier Ray Davies, optent pour la simplicité. La pochette garde bien un style propre à cette année 1967 : mélange rétro-moderne à la Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band des Beatles : 1900, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde... Le psychédélique est évoqué au travers de l'entrelacement art déco des fioritures graphiques. Le nom de l'album annonce cependant « Quelque chose d’autre » et, de fait, aucune des chansons ne revient aux fameux accords rythmés ayant au départ lancé les Kinks (You really got me, Till the end of the day, I need you...). De nummers Death of a Clown en Susannah's Still Alive op de remaster van 2011 zijn als single uitgebracht onder de naam Dave Davies maar zijn in werkelijkheid uitgevoerd door The Kinks. - Something Else by the Kinks je album od britské rockové skupiny The Kinks Bylo-li album Face to Face pozoruhodnou nahrávkou, tak jeho následovník – Something Else – dosáhl hudební dokonalosti. Nabízí 13 klasických „britpopových“ songů, které jsou po skladatelské stránce vybroušenější a z obsahového hlediska daleko sentimentálnější a nostalgičtější než jejich dosavadní produkce. Kinks se nepřipojili k módní vlně psychedelické hudby, která v této době dominovala rockovému světu, a zůstali věrní sami sobě. Žádná deska z roku 1967 proto nezní tak, jako tato. - Something Else by the Kinks, often referred to simply as Something Else, is the fifth UK studio album by the Kinks, released in September 1967. The album continued the Kinks' trend toward an eccentric baroque pop and music hall-influenced style defined by Ray Davies' observational and introspective lyrics. It also marks the final involvement of American producer Shel Talmy in the Kinks' 1960s studio recordings; henceforth Ray Davies would produce the group's recordings. Many of the songs feature the keyboard work of Nicky Hopkins and the backing vocals of Davies's wife, Rasa. The album was preceded by the singles "Waterloo Sunset", one of the group's most acclaimed songs, and the Dave Davies solo record "Death of a Clown", both of which charted in the UK top 3. (en)
