Syrphus ribesii is a very common Holarctic species of hoverfly. Its larvae feed on aphids. In common with many other species of hoverfly, males have the eyes meeting on the top of the head, whilst females have their eyes widely separated.

Dorůstá 9 – 11 mm. Ve volné přírodě lze pestřenku rybízovou zahlédnout od dubna do listopadu. Při letu se často díky velice rychlému mávání křídel doslova zastavuje na místě. Imaga se živí nektarem a pylem, šedobělavé larvy jsou však masožravé a hrají nepřehlédnutelnou roli při biologickém hubení mšic. (cs)
