The “System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe” (SIGLE) was established in 1980, two years after a seminar on grey literature organised by the European Commission in York (UK). Operated by a network of national information or document supply centres active in collecting and promoting grey literature, SIGLE was an online, pan-European electronic bibliographic database and document delivery system. The objective was to provide access to European grey literature and to improve bibliographic coverage.

Géré et alimenté par un réseau des principaux centres européens de collecte et de fourniture de documents scientifiques et techniques, SIGLE était la seule base de données bibliographique européenne en ligne proposant un accès mondial aux références de littérature grise et intégrant un service de fourniture de document.La vocation primaire de SIGLE était la fourniture de la littérature grise produite dans les pays de la Communauté Européenne et d'en améliorer la couverture bibliographique. Financé de 1980 à 1985 par la Commission des Communautés européennes, SIGLE fut produite à partir de 1985 par une association nouvellement créée pour favoriser l'acquisition, l'identification et la diffusion de la littérature grise, l' ou EAGLE. L'alimentation de la base de données s'arrête en 2005 avec la dissolution de l'association EAGLE lors d'une assemblée générale. En 2007, en coopération avec le dernier Centre de traitement technique, , l'ancien représentant français INIST-CNRS intègre les notices SIGLE dans un nouveau site en libre accès, OpenSIGLE, hébergé par l'INIST-CNRS. - The “System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe” (SIGLE) was established in 1980, two years after a seminar on grey literature organised by the European Commission in York (UK). Operated by a network of national information or document supply centres active in collecting and promoting grey literature, SIGLE was an online, pan-European electronic bibliographic database and document delivery system. The objective was to provide access to European grey literature and to improve bibliographic coverage. From 1980 to 1985, SIGLE was funded by the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). When CEC financial support ended in 1985, the national centres formed a network for the acquisition, identification and dissemination of grey literature called “European Association for Grey Literature Exploitation” or EAGLE, who became the producer of the SIGLE database. Input to the database ended in 2005 when the EAGLE General Assembly decided the liquidation of the network. In 2007, together with the last EAGLE operating agent, FIZ Karlsruhe, the French STI centre INIST-CNRS integrated the SIGLE records into a new open access database called OpenSIGLE hosted by INIST-CNRS.
