Den handlar om tunnelbanans linje ”A”, som går genom New York från östra Brooklyn och passerar Harlem på sin väg till norra Manhattan. Låten blev en slags signaturmelodi för Duke Ellington och användes ofta som inledning vid Ella Fitzgeralds konserter.
