The ten realms, sometimes referred to as the ten worlds, are part of the belief of some forms of Buddhism that there are 240 conditions of life which sentient beings are subject to, and which they experience from moment to moment. The popularization of this term is often attributed to the Chinese scholar Chih-i who spoke about the "co-penetration of the ten worlds."

La dottrina dei "Dieci mondi" differisce sostanzialmente da quella dei "Sei destini" non solo per il numero e le classi dei "regni" descritti (dieci e sei) quanto piuttosto nel fatto che la prima considera coesistenti in un medesimo mondo gli altri nove (e quindi presenti nella medesima vita di un individuo), mentre la seconda pur trattando degli esseri che passano da una condizione di esistenza all'altra lo fa sia nel senso degli stati mentali durante una vita, che nel senso della rinascita degli stessi. La dottrina dei "Dieci mondi", elaborata inizialmente in Cina, si diffuse presso tutti quei paesi buddhisti che furono influenzati dal Canone buddhista cinese: Giappone, Corea e Vietnam.
