Thacia was a Roman-Berber civitas in the province of Africa Proconsulare. The city is known as the site of a battle in 545AD. Forces led by the Berber King Antalas and the Byzantine general Stotzas fought against the troops of Solomon, the Prefect of Africa. The Berbers launched a general revolt and inflicted a severe defeat on the Byzantines in Thacia in 545. Antalas, Stotzas and Solomon were all killed in the battle.

L'historien français René Cagnat identifie à la fin du XIXe siècle Thacia avec le village de qui était à l'époque un fondouk mentionné par l'archéologue français Victor Guérin : « le seul monument [romain] encore en partie debout est un mausolée appelé par les Arabes Hanout-el-Hadjem, dénomination donnée en Tunisie par les indigènes a plusieurs constructions de ce genre. Ce mausolée forme un rectangle de cinq mètres trente-trois centimètres de long sur quatre mètres soixante-seize centimètres de large. ». (fr)
