Con questa poesia Eliot iniziò a progettare consapevolmente la raccolta dei Quartetti come un tutto unico. Essa venne scritta durante i raid aerei tedeschi sulla Gran Bretagna successivi al sostanziale fallimento della Battaglia d'Inghilterra e del tentativo di invasione tedesca del Regno Unito. Eliot visse pertanto sotto la costante minaccia dei bombardamenti, mentre componeva e teneva lezioni e conferenze nella zona. Il tema della poesia è il tempo e quale posto occupi l'umanità nel tempo. La vita viene metaforicamente descritta come un viaggio su una barca; Eliot afferma anche che la fissazione dell'umanità per la scienza e per i profitti distoglie i viaggiatori dal raggiungere la loro vera destinazione.
