The Marble Faun: Or, The Romance of Monte Beni, also known by the British title Transformation, was the last of the four major romances by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was published in 1860. The Marble Faun, written on the eve of the American Civil War, is set in a fantastical Italy. The romance mixes elements of a fable, pastoral, gothic novel, and travel guide.

Après Valjoie (The Blithedale Romance) en 1852, à l'approche de la cinquantaine, Hawthorne se détourne de la littérature et se fait nommer consul à Liverpool grâce à l'appui de son ami Franklin Pierce, alors président des États-Unis. Il restera en poste de 1853 à 1857. Accompagné de son épouse Sophia Peabody, Hawthorne quitte l'Angleterre pour l'Italie en 1858 et visite le pays pendant près de deux ans. Il écrit le Faune de marbre après avoir découvert le faune (ou satyre) de Praxitèle lors d'une exposition de sculptures romaines. (fr)
