The Triratna Buddhist Community (formerly the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO)) is an international fellowship of Buddhists and others who aspire to its path of mindfulness. It was founded by Sangharakshita (born Dennis Philip Edward Lingwood) in the UK in 1967, and describes itself as "an international network dedicated to communicating Buddhist truths in ways appropriate to the modern world". In keeping with Buddhist traditions, it also pays attention to contemporary ideas, particularly drawn from Western philosophy, psychotherapy, and art.

Sangharakshita bracht vele jaren door in India nadat hij aldaar in het Britse leger had gediend en werd in 1949 ingewijd als een theravadische bhikkhu. Hij keerde in 1964 terug naar Engeland en raakte steeds meer overtuigd dat ondanks de grote belangstelling voor de boeddhistische leringen, het boeddhisme in Engeland in de 60'er jaren formalistisch en sektarisch was. (nl) Die Buddhistische Gemeinschaft Triratna, bis Mai 2010 bekannt unter "Freunde des Westlichen Buddhistischen Ordens (FWBO)" ist eine buddhistische Bewegung, die 1967 in Großbritannien von Sangharakshita gegründet wurde, gefolgt 1968 von der Gründung des Buddhistischen Ordens Triratna (vormals: Westlicher Buddhistischer Orden). Sangharakshita kam als junger Funker im Dienst der Armee 1944 nach Indien und blieb nach der Demobilisierung viele Jahre dort. 1949 wurde er als Theravada bhikkhu ordiniert. Auf Einladung des "English Sangha Trust" kehrte er 1964 nach Großbritannien zurück. Er kam zu der Erkenntnis, dass trotz des großen Interesses an der buddhistischen Lehre (Dharma) der Buddhismus in Großbritannien zu formalistisch und sektiererisch war. Aus dieser Erkenntnis heraus gründete er eine (de) La Comunidad budista Triratna fue fundada por Sangharakshita en Inglaterra en los años 1960. Durante muchos años se conoció como Los Amigos de la Orden Budista Occidental; sin embargo a medida que el crecimiento del movimiento a nivel internacional y en parte con la implantación en la India hizo que la palabra “occidental” dejase de ser apropiada. En 2010 los Amigos de la Orden Budista Occidental pasaron a denominarse Comunidad Budista Triratna. “Triratna” significa “Tres Joyas”, y se refiere al Buda, el Dharma y la Sangha: que son respectivamente el ideal de la Iluminación, el Camino que conduce a la Iluminación y la Comunidad de aquellos que han entrado en el camino transcendental.
