Ultra High Frequency Follow-On (UFO) satellite system is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) program sponsored and operated by the United States Space Force to provide communications for airborne, ship, submarine and ground forces. The UFO constellation replaced the U.S. DoD Fleet Satellite Communications System (FLTSATCOM) constellation and consisted of eleven satellites. The ground terminal segment consists of equipment and resident personnel at existing satellite communication stations. The satellites are controlled by the 10th Space Operations Squadron (Space Delta 8) located at the Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, California.

Das UFO-Programm wurde als Nachfolger der FLTSATCOM-Satellitenserie geplant, woraus sich auch der Name ableitete. Insgesamt elf von Boeing gefertigte Satelliten (davon zehn erfolgreich) wurden in den Jahren von 1993 bis 2003 von Atlas-Raketen in den geostationären Orbit gestartet. Die Satelliten sind für eine Mindestlebensdauer von 10 Jahren ausgelegt. Es wurden vier verschiedene Varianten (als Block 1 bis 4 bezeichnet) gefertigt, die neben den primären UHF-Transpondern weitere unterschiedliche Transponder in den SHF, EHF und Ka-Band Frequenzbereichen besitzen. Die Block-3-Satelliten stellen das im Ka-Band arbeitende Breitband Global Broadcast System zur Verfügung. Das Nachfolgesystem MUOS wird seit Februar 2012 aufgebaut. (de)

La capacità di operare in banda EHF permette anche alla rete UFO di connettersi al sistema strategico . I satelliti otto, nove e dieci sono anche muniti di un sistema di trasmissione globale nella banda Ka. Il primo lancio di un satellite UFO ha avuto luogo il 25 marzo 1993, mentre il completamento della costellazione è legato alle esigenze di sostituzione dei satelliti obsolescenti della costellazione FLTSATCOM. Il vettore di lancio di elezione del sistema è il missile Atlas II, anche se è prevista una compatibilità con sistemi di navetta spaziale. The UFO bus and carico utile pesano 1,04 tonnellate. La pannellatura del modulo fotovoltaico si estende per 18,4 m ed è in grado di produrre 2.500 watt alla fine dei 14 anni del ciclo pianificato di operatività.
