Wagon numbers (or coach numbers) are key data for railway operations. They enable a railway wagon or coach to be positively identified and form a common language between railway operators, infrastructure companies and the state authorities. The system of wagon numbering has been laid down by the International Union of Railways (Union internationale des chemins de fer or UIC, founded in 1922) and is similar to that used for the locomotives and multiple units. Vehicle numbering is now governed by the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail and in Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) of the European Union.

- Die UIC-Wagennummer (früher Waggonnummer) ermöglicht eine eindeutige Identifizierung von Güter- und Reisezugwagen und beinhaltet wichtige Schlüsseldaten für den Eisenbahnverkehr. Die Wagennummer wird von der UIC vorgegeben und bildet eine gemeinsame Sprache zwischen Eisenbahnverkehrsunternehmen (EVU), Infrastrukturbetreibern und den zuständigen staatlichen Stellen. Verpflichtend waren die EDV-gerechten Nummern anfangs nur für regel- und breitspurige Fahrzeuge, die international eingesetzt werden sollten. Bei Schmalspurfahrzeugen war und ist die Anwendung des Systems freiwillig. Seit der verpflichtenden Einführung der UIC-Nummern 2006 werden sie auch beim Verkauf von Fahrzeugen in andere Staaten im Anwendungsraum nicht mehr geändert. Pro označování osobních vozů platí vyhláška UIC 438-1, nákladních vozů UIC 438-2, hnacích vozidel UIC 438-3 a speciálních vozidel UIC 438-4. Systém stanovený UIC byl převzat jako identifikace železničních vozidel v provozu v Evropské unii rozhodnutím Evropské komise, nejprve vydáním rozhodnutí z roku 2006, tzv. TSI - provoz a řízení dopravy, které v zemích Evropské unie plně vstoupilo v platnost v roce 2010. To bylo roku 2012 nahrazeno novým vydáním (již společným pro konvenční i vysokorychlostní systém), které formou změny přičleňuje problematiku k problematice registru vozidel, řešené jinými TSI (vynechává přitom některá ustanovení nesouvisející přímo s identifikací, především písmenná označení řad vozů). Dvanáctimístné číslo je v terminologii TSI (2012) nazýváno evropské číslo vozidla (EVN), v předchozím vydání (2006) to bylo standardní číslo; vyhlášky UIC tyto pojmy neznají. (cs)
