| - Ein National Marine Sanctuary ist ein von den USA auf Bundesebene ausgewiesenes Gebiet in den Gewässern der USA, das die Meeresumwelt mit speziellen Erhaltungs-, Erholungs-, Ökologie-, Geschichts-, Kultur-, Archäologie-, Wissenschafts-, Bildungs- oder Esthetikfunktionen schützt. Das National Marine Sanctuary System bestand zeitweilig aus 14 Meeresschutzgebieten, die 388.498 km² umfassen. Heutzutage gibt es noch 13 nationale Meeresschutzgebiete, die vom National Marine Sanctuaries Program (NMSP), einer Abteilung der National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), verwaltet werden.
