Abans de la independència de l'Equador, Rocafuerte es destacà com a polític i la ciutat de Guayaquil l'escollí com a portaveu per a les corts de Cadis de 1812. Fins al 1817 residí a Europa i poc després de retornar a l'Equador inicià una tasca diplomàtica com a representant de Simón Bolívar als Estats Units, Mèxic i el Regne Unit, recolzant el projecte bolivarià d'unió americana. Opposé au régime de Juan José Flores, il prend à plusieurs reprises les armes contre lui avant de s'allier en 1834 pour éviter une invasion étrangère. He was born into an aristocratic family in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and as a youth, was sent to Madrid to finish his education. He returned to Ecuador in 1807, and committed himself to freeing his land, first from Spanish rule, and later from the Republic of Gran Colombia. During his presidency, Rocafuerte passed a new constitution in 1835, and gave greater protection to Native Americans in Ecuador. (en)

Vicente Rocafuerte stamde uit een aristocratische familie uit Guayaquil. Hij werd naar Madrid gestuurd om zijn opleiding te voltooien. In 1807 keerde hij naar Ecuador terug en nam actief deel aan de strijd tegen de Spanjaarden. Na de stichting van de Republiek Gran Colombia (1816) verzette hij zich tegen deze staat en ijverde hij voor een onafhankelijk Ecuador. Rocafuerte overleed op 16 mei 1847. (nl)
