Vincenzo Gemito (July 16, 1852 – March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor and artist. Although he worked in various studios of well-known artists in his native Naples, Rome and Paris, he is considered to have largely been self-taught, the reason he produced such distinctive works for that time, replacing sentiment with outstanding realism. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Od deseti lat pracoval jako učedník v sochařském atelieru, kde prokázal značnou zručnost, takže od 12 let začal navštěvovat neapolskou výtvarnou akademii. Zde se spřátelil s malířem Antoniem Mancinim. Již v patnácti letech vytvořil mistrovské dílo, keramiku Hráč (Il Giocatore), kterou zakoupil král Viktor Emanuel II. a nechal ji vystavit v muzeu. Vincenzo Gemito werd te vondeling gelegd en groeide op in een adoptiegezin. Zijn talent werd op jonge leeftijd herkend en vanaf zijn twaalfde volgde hij les aan de Academie van Schone Kunsten in Napels. Op zijn zeventiende stelde hij zijn eerste beeldhouwwerk tentoon dat onmiddellijk sensatie veroorzaakte. De kaartspeler stelt een straatkind voor dat zittend op de grond met speelkaarten speelt. Het plaasteren beeldhouwwerk viel op door zijn realisme en naturalisme en vormde een breuk met de academische traditie. Het werk werd aangekocht door de koning. In de jaren 1870 was Gemito gevestigd in Parijs en ook daar oogstte zijn naturalistische en onafgewerkt (nl)
