Washptah, with the second name Izi, was an ancient Egyptian official in the Fifth Dynasty under king Neferirkare Kakai. His most important title was that of a vizier, making him to the most important official at the royal court, only second to the king. Next to the office of the vizier he hold several other important positions, including overseer of the scribes of the king's document and overseer of all royal works.

Il commence probablement sa carrière dans l'administration royale du temps du règne de Sahourê et gravit les échelons de la cour au point d'être nommé vizir du royaume par le successeur de ce pharaon. À ce titre il est à la tête de l'administration et de la justice du roi et chargé d'organiser les expéditions vers les carrières et contrées limitrophe du pays qui fournissait les matières premières alimentant l'économie du pays. Il supervise également, dirige parfois, les grands chantiers de constructions dont notamment l'édification de la nouvelle pyramide royale qui s'élève sur le plateau d'Abousir au nord de Saqqarah. Le iscrizioni della sua tomba riportano la circostanza di come Washptah sia morto, per un incidente, in presenza dello stesso sovrano. I fatti sono raccontati da Mernetjersetni, figlio del visir, che ricevette dal sovrano l'incarico di edificare la tomba del padre. (it)

Waschptah ist vor allem von seiner Mastaba in Sakkara bekannt. Dort fand sich eine stark zerstörte biographische Inschrift, die davon berichtet, dass Waschptah ein Bauprojekt des Königs besichtigte und dort anscheinend einen Unfall hatte. Der König ließ Hilfe kommen, doch scheint Waschptah ums Leben gekommen zu sein. Der Herrscher ordnete den Bau eines Grabes und die Einrichtung eines Totenkultes an. Die Inschrift selbst stammt von dem ältesten Sohn von Waschptah. (de)

Washptah is mainly known from his mastaba in North Saqqara. It was recorded by Gaston Maspero who assigned to it the number D38. In his tomb is recorded a biographical inscription that reports that Washptah visited a building site of king Neferirkare, he got ill and the king was sending physicians for help. The text is not well preserved so that several details remain unclear. It seems that Washptah died and the king took care of building a tomb and a funerary cult. The inscription was made by the eldest son of Washptah. (en)

Probabilmente cominciò la sua carriera durante il regno di Sahura e salì tutti in gradi all'interno dell'amministrazione reale fino ad essere nominato visir dal successore di Sahura. Tra i suoi incarichi vi fu anche l'organizzazione delle carovane inviate nei paesi confinanti per l'approvvigionamento di materie prime.Supervisionò anche i lavori di costruzione della piramide del sovrano posta a nord di Saqqara. Le iscrizioni della sua tomba riportano la circostanza di come Washptah sia morto, per un incidente, in presenza dello stesso sovrano. I fatti sono raccontati da Mernetjersetni, figlio del visir, che ricevette dal sovrano l'incarico di edificare la tomba del padre. Dalle iscrizioni apprendiamo che durante una visita del re, accompagnato da tutta la corte, al cantiere di un nuovo monumento, detto bellezza di..., il visir cadde improvvisamente al suolo come fulminato. Userkhara fece immediatamente trasportare il malato nel suo palazzo e convocò i suoi medici ed i suoi sacerdoti chiedendo loro di salvare la vita al primo tra i suoi cortigiani. Il re ordinò anche di acquistare un cofano contenente papiri di sapienza medica ma tutto inutilmente, Washptah infine morì. Afflitto dalla perdita del suo unico confidente Userkhara si ritirò in preghiera nei suoi appartamenti e poi dette l'ordine al figlio del visir di preparare la tomba del padre nei pressi della piramide di Sahura. Per decreto reale il corpo di Washptah fu racchiuso in un sarcofago di ebano, fatto mai accaduto prima a nessun nobile. I blocchi di pietra su cui è riportata questa storia sono stati rimossi dalla mastaba e si trovano ora presso il Museo egizio del Cairo (it)
