Sir William Burrell (9 July 1861 - 29 March 1958) was one of the world’s great art collectors. He and his wife Constance, Lady Burrell (1875–1961), created a collection of over 8,000 artworks which they gave to their home city of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1944, in what has been described as ‘one of the greatest gifts ever made to any city in the world’. It is displayed at the Burrell Collection museum in Glasgow.

Terzo di nove figli di una famiglia di armatori, Burrell iniziò ad operare nell'impresa di famiglia nel 1875, all'età di 14 anni e in seguito, alla morte del padre, prese in mano le redini della ditta. Burrell e i fratelli diventarono imprenditori di successo, grazie alla tecnica di acquistare nuove navi quando l'economia stava andando male e di sfruttarle poi quando ripartiva. Operando in questo modo la famiglia diventò molto ricca, situazione che permise a Burrell di dedicarsi al collezionismo di pezzi di antiquariato, sfruttando anche in questo campo il suo senso degli affari.
