Pertanyent a una nissaga de músics era fill d' m. el 10 de març de 1895 i net de Thomas German Reed (1817-1888), el besavi de William ja era músic. Il a été le premier violon de l'Orchestre symphonique de Londres pendant 23 ans (1912–1935) mais il est plus connu pour son amitié avec Elgar (1910–1934) et pour son livre Elgar tel que je l'ai connu (Elgar As I Knew Him, 1936) dans lequel il décrit avec beaucoup de détails la genèse du concerto pour violon en si mineur.
