El 1994 comença a treballar com a professor de fotografia i dibuix a la Michaelis School, càrrec que abandona el 1999 per dedicar-se plenament a la creació artística. Zwelethu Mthethwa studierte an der Michaelis School of Fine Art der Universität Kapstadt und dank eines Fulbright-Stipendiums am Rochester Institute of Technology. Dort erlangte er 1989 den Master in Imaging Arts. Er lehrte von 1994 bis 2000 an der Michaelis School of Fine Art in Kapstadt. International bekannt wurde er durch seine Farbfotografien, die das Leben der Bewohner in den Townships dokumentieren. (de) Zwelethu Mthethwa (Durban, 1960) è un artista e fotografo sudafricano. Studia belle arti e si laurea all'Università di Città del Capo, seguendo poi nel 1989 un Master in Arte presso il , negli Stati Uniti. Dopo avere insegnato alcuni anni presso la dal 1999 si dedica a tempo pieno al lavoro di artista.Espone in Sudafrica fino al 1985 e in seguito in circuiti internazionali. Nel 2000 partecipa alla Biennale di Dakar, nel 2001 espone a Roma "Sacred Homes - Mother & Child" e nel 2005 presenta “The Experience of Art” alla Biennale di Venezia. (it)
