A referendum on the citizenship law was held in Latvia on 3 October 1998. The Saeima had made amendments to the law in June that increased the opportunities for naturalisation and provided the additional option of obtaining Latvian citizenship for non-citizens (nepilsoņi) and stateless persons (bezvalstnieki) born in Latvia from August 1991 onwards. Voters were asked "are you for or against the repeal of the law "Amendments in the Law of Citizenship"". A majority of 53.9% voted against repealing the law.

Le référendum propose la confirmation d'une loi qui permet la naturalisation facilitée des apatrides nés après 1991. Le référendum a un taux de participation de 69,2 % avec 928 040 votants pour un corps électoral de 1 341 873 personnes. 46,1 % des votants ont répondu favorablement à la question posée soit 416 584 personnes. 53,9 % des votants se sont opposés à la question posée soit 487 559 personnes.

I partiti di destra si sono opposti a questi emendamenti, raccolgiendo il numero di firme necessarie per ottenere l'indizione di un referendum abrigativo. La maggioranza del 53,9% ha votato per mantenere la legge. (it)
