Abel Meeropol (February 10, 1903 – October 29, 1986) was an American songwriter and poet whose works were published under his pseudonym, Lewis Allan. He wrote the poem "Strange Fruit" (1937), which was recorded by Billie Holiday. Meeropol was a member of the American Communist Party, but later quit.

Meeropol besuchte bis 1921 die Dewitt Clinton High School in der New Yorker Bronx, an der er ab 1928 auch 17 Jahre lang als Lehrer für englische Literatur unterrichtete. Daneben war er als Autor für Theater, Film, Rundfunk und Fernsehen tätig und politisch in der Kommunistischen Partei aktiv. Unter dem Eindruck von Photos des Lynchmordes an Thomas Shipp und Abram Smith schrieb er 1937 den Song Strange Fruit, für den er auch die Melodie komponierte. Das antirassistische Lied wurde berühmt in der Interpretation von Billie Holiday und wurde 1978 in die Grammy Hall of Fame eingeführt. (de)

Quando vide la foto scattata da Lawrence Beitler del linciaggio di Thomas Shipp e Abram Smith a Marion (Indiana), ne ricavò un'impressione talmente forte che non riuscì a dormire per giorni; scrisse quindi la poesia Bitter Fruit (Frutto amaro), e la pubblicò con lo pseudonimo di Lewis Allan (i nomi dei suoi figli morti in tenera età) sulla rivista New York Teacher e nel giornale comunista New Masses.
