Abraham the Great of Kashkar was the father of the Assyrian monastic revival in the 6th century. He is a doctor and saint of the Assyrian Church of the East. He was born in Kashkar in Persia around 492. He left there to preach the Gospel at Al-Hirah, leaving there to study monastic life at Scetes. But at the synod of Beth Lapat the Assyrian Church of the East decided that all monks and nuns should marry.Obviously, this was in order to please the Zoroastrian rulers, who held family life sacred.The decision severely weakened the church. The decision was reverted in 553. Abraham died in 586.

  • Abraham von Kaschkar, genannt der Große (* 503; † 8. Januar 588) war der Begründer des Wiederauflebens der assyrischen Klosterbewegung im Nahen Osten während des 6. Jahrhunderts. Das Klosterleben war bei den frühen syrischen und mesopotamischen Christen sehr beliebt. Einige waren der festen Überzeugung, dass nur streng zölibatäres Leben zur Erlösung führen könnte. Alle Mönche und Nonnen waren Nomaden, bis ungefähr im Jahr 350 das erste zönobitisch Kloster Mesopotamiens auf dem Berg Izla über der Stadt Nisibis nach ägyptischem Vorbild gründete.
