Sir James Alfred Ewing KCB FRS FRSE DL MInstitCE (27 March 1855 − 7 January 1935) was a Scottish physicist and engineer, best known for his work on the magnetic properties of metals and, in particular, for his discovery of, and coinage of the word, hysteresis.

Zdobył szczególne uznanie za odkrycie magnetycznych właściwości żelaza, stali i innych materiałów. W latach 1903-1916 był dyrektorem wydziału edukacji morskiej Admiralicji. Od 1916 r. był rektorem uniwersytetu w Edynburgu. W latach 1914-1917 kierował departamentem szyfrów admiralicji. W 1911 r. uzyskał tytuł szlachecki. (pl) Сэр Джеймс Альфред Юинг (англ.
