De dansen zijn geënt op dansen die al heel lang gedanst worden. Ze vinden hun wortels dus in zogenoemde volksdansen. Binnen de balfolk gaat het er niet om om die dansen zo getrouw mogelijk te dansen, maar staat vooral de gezelligheid centraal. Dat betekent dat de stijl van dansen zelf ook enigszins evolueert in de loop van de tijd.
