In a match that went into extra time, the U.S. won 4–3 to advance to the final against Japan. The game was called "the greatest knockout match in major-tournament football" since 1982 by Scott Murray of The Guardian. Both teams wound up winning medals in the Olympics: the U.S. won their third straight gold medal, while Canada won the bronze medal.
