Cante Alentejano is a Portuguese music genre based on vocal music without instrumentation from the Alentejo region. It was inscribed in 2014 in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, one of two Portuguese music traditions, the other being Fado.Its origins come from a similar popular music genre created in the region of Minde by campinos. It is said that the habit of singing without instruments was common in bullherding as a means to coordinate efforts among the campinos.

Das Lied Grândola, Vila Morena des oppositionellen Liedermachers José Afonso ist im Stile des Cante Alentejano gehalten und kann als das bekannteste Beispiel dieses Gesangsstils gelten. Das Stück war am 25. April 1974 die entscheidende Losung in der Nelkenrevolution, mit der die älteste Diktatur Europas endete. Die Revolution wurde im Alentejo besonders begeistert aufgenommen und griff dort besonders tief. (de)

Terminadas las estrofas, puede el punto recomenzar con una nueva deja, siguiendo el mismo conjunto de estrofas. Este ciclo se repite el número de veces que los participantes deseen. Esta característica repetitiva, así como el lento, y la abundancia de pausas contribuyen a la naturaleza monótona del cante. (es)
