The Carracks black sword, sometimes called a crab sword, is a type of sword invented in Portugal, during the 15th century, designed to be used by soldiers and sailors in ships and caravels in the Age of Discovery. It is characterized by having a guard with two protective rings, with the guard terminals in the form of two flat drops, the referred guard terminals facing toward the tip of the blade, and forming round large plates, sharpened to the point where they can be used as extra blades, because they can be convenient in close combat.

The protective rings, in addition to the protective function of the fingers, can also serve to trap an opponent's blade. These swords were painted black to not reflect light and announce their presence on ships, and to resist rusting caused by salt water. It was also known by Portuguese soldiers as colhona (which in rude Portuguese means approximately “big balls”) due to the round shape of the terminal plates, reminiscent of a representation of the testicles in a phallic symbol in the form of sword. This type of sword would have appeared between 1460 and 1480 and saw much of its use in Portuguese trading cities in Africa, coming to be used as a symbol of honor by the local chiefs. (en)

- A Espada preta de bordo ou de caranguejo, também denominada pela soldadesca por colhona, é uma espada inventada no século XV, em Portugal, concebida para ser usada pelos marinheiros e soldados portugueses a bordo de naus e caravelas durante a época dos Descobrimentos. É caracterizada por possuir dois anéis protectores na guarda, com os terminais da guarda em forma de pingo achatado, virados em direcção à ponta da lâmina, formando estes terminais chapas largas, a ponto de se tornarem redondas, chapas estas que podem ser afiadas, para poderem funcionar como lâminas extras, por serem convenientes numa luta corpo a corpo. Os referidos anéis protectores, para além da função protectora dos dedos, permitem também uma forma de manuseio da espada com ângulos de ataque até aos 160º. A variedade de posições que a espada possibilita mudou drasticamente a forma de luta, podendo ser usada em 50% dos casos para o golpe, e em 50% dos casos para a estocada. Por outro lado os anéis protectores ainda serviam para prender e quebrar a lâmina do adversário. Estas espadas eram pintadas de preto para não reflectirem a luz e não denunciarem a sua presença, evitando-se também o seu enferrujamento quando utilizadas perto da água salgada. Este tipo de espada terá aparecido entre 1460 e 1480, e viu muito da sua utilização ser feita nas praças portuguesas em África, chegando a ser utilizado como símbolo honorífico pelos chefes indígenas. Ficou também conhecida pela soldadesca como colhona, devido ao feitio das chapas redondas dos terminais, evocativo de testículos numa representação do símbolo fálico sob a forma de espada. (pt)
