Elle est devenue cathédrale lorsque le diocèse anglican de Chelmsford a été créé en 1914 et est le siège de l'évêque de Chelmsford. Elle fut probablement construite avec la ville il y a huit cents ans. Elle fut reconstruite au XVe et XVIe siècles, avec des murs de moellons, de pierres et de brique. Iglica została przebudowana w 1749 roku. Nawa główna zawaliła się w 1800 roku po wykopaliskach w podziemiach i została odbudowana przez Johna Johnsona. Prezbiterium i południowa kaplica zostały odrestaurowane przez Frederica Chancellora w 1862 roku, który zaprojektował także północny transept i północną nawę boczną dodaną w 1873 roku.
