Claude Fauchet (3 July 1530 – January 1602) was a sixteenth-century French historian, antiquary, and pioneering romance philologist. Fauchet published the earliest printed work of literary history in a vernacular language in Europe, the Recueil de l'origine de la langue et poësie françoise (1581). He was a high-ranking official in the governments of Charles IX, Henri III, and Henri IV, serving as the president of the Cour des monnaies.

Il fut premier président de la Cour des monnaies et fut nommé historiographe de France par Henri IV. Il fut l'un des premiers qui se soient occupés à recueillir les anciennes chroniques et les anciens auteurs français. (fr)

Si applica nello studio dei primi cronachisti francesi, proponendosi di pubblicare estratti che avrebbero fatto luce sui primi tempi della monarchia. Durante le guerre di religione, allorché fu costretto ad abbandonare Parigi con Enrico III nel 1589 (probabilmente non vi ritornerà prima del 18 aprile del 1594), perse gran parte dei suoi libri e manoscritti per colpa dei soldati del duca di Mayenne. La stima che ne fece, forse esagerando, si aggirava su circa duemila libri e manoscritti perduti. Si stabilì dunque a Marsiglia. (it)
