Coffea stenophylla, also known as highland coffee or Sierra Leone coffee, is a species of Coffea originating from West Africa. It is currently not commercially cultivated due to its low yield and small berries, which makes it inferior to the two economically dominant species Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (robusta). Research is being done to evaluate the sensory and agronomic benefits of commercially cultivating it as a method of expanding the genetic diversification of global coffee stock and increasing resilience to both climate change and crop disease pressures.

Jordbrukaren Andrew Moore var en före detta slav som hade flyttat från USA till Sierra Leone, som Storbritannien nyligen hade inrättat som koloni åt bland annat före detta slavar. Den svenske botanikern Afzelius var lärjunge till Linné och utsänd av den brittiska vetenskapsakademin att utforska kolonins flora. I februari 1796 överlämnade Moore några bönor han hade hittat i skogen till kolonialledningen. Afzelius fastställde att det var kaffe och gjorde en inledande beskrivning av arten, efter att Moore och andra senare även lämnade in hela buskar. (sv)
