Their main homeland is in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, adjacent to Lake Turkana. A questa etnia appartengono circa 60.000 persone (di cui circa 50.000 in territorio etiope), stanziate lungo la valle del fiume Omo e lungo la sponda settentrionale del Lago Turkana. In Äthiopien wurden bei der Volkszählung 2007 48.067 Personen als Dassanetch registriert, größtenteils in der Woreda in der Region der südlichen Nationen, Nationalitäten und Völker; in Kenia sind es einige Tausend. Die Sprache der Dassanetch gehört zur Omo-Tana-Untergruppe der ostkuschitischen Sprachen aus der afroasiatischen Sprachfamilie. (de)
