Dual slalom is a mountain bike racing discipline similar to 4X racing. It consists of two racers racing two almost identical tracks next to each other down a slope. The courses are usually short; one run lasting about 30 seconds. It is filled with tabletop jumps, doubles and bermed turns. Both riders' times are taken and then they switch tracks for another round, whereafter the combined times are counted and slowest rider is eliminated. The winner moves on to the next round until they have 2 riders left racing in the final.

Wygrany zawodnik przechodzi do następnego etapu zawodów zaś przegrany odpada. Czas przejazdu zawodników jest rejestrowany wyłącznie do celów statystycznych. W wariancie DS zawody są rozgrywane na wzór – tzn. zawodnicy zjeżdżają po dwóch, równoległych i identycznych trasach. W innym wariancie zawodnicy zjeżdżają równocześnie po tej samej trasie – więc jest to w zasadzie sport kontaktowy, choć celowe spychanie oponenta z trasy jest zabronione. (pl)

In the first few heats, the fastest riders were pitted against the slowest, thus eliminating the slowest riders almost immediately. Greg Herbold won the 1988 inaugural Dual Slalom. In 1988, Jimmy Deaton and John Tomac were the last male riders to compete, with Tomac emerging as the winner. (en)

Zazwyczaj nie posiadają one tylnego zawieszenia, bądź mają je ograniczone do 3-4 cali (76-102 mm) skoku i mają maksymalnie uproszczoną konstrukcję, gdyż w tym sporcie najważniejsza jest niska waga roweru i techniczne umiejętności zawodnika a nie możliwość osiągania jak największych prędkości. Od 2002 r. Union Cycliste Internationale zaprzestało przeprowadzania serii zawodów Pucharu Świata w dualu i zastąpiło je Pucharem Świata w 4X. (pl)
