The Longhorn or British Longhorn is a British breed of beef cattle characterised by long curving horns. It originated in northern England, in the counties of Lancashire, Westmorland and Yorkshire, and later spread to the English Midlands and to Ireland. It was originally a slow heavy draught animal; cows gave a little milk, although high in fat. In the eighteenth century Robert Bakewell applied his methods of selective breeding to these cattle, which for a short time became the predominant British breed. Both the numbers and the quality of the breed declined throughout the nineteenth century and for much of the twentieth. A breed society was formed in 1878, and a herd-book published in that year.

Největší rozkvět a rozšíření plemene nastalo v 18. století, pak byl vytlačen užitkovějšími plemeny a dnes jsou jeho stavy nízké. Původní zaměření plemene bylo trojstranné se stejným důrazem na produkci masa, mléka i tažných zvířat. Je to skot středního tělesného rámce a pevné konstituce. Nápadné jsou dlouhé tenké rohy, které vybíhají daleko směrem dopředu. je rovný, záď je výrazná, hrudník klenutý a končetiny pevné s dobrými paznehty. Zbarvení je různorodé, od tmavě hnědé přes rezavou až po červeně plesnivou barvu, na hřbetě a na břiše se vždy táhne bílý pruh, bílý je též ocas a žádoucí se bílá skvrna na kýtě. Longhorn je nenáročný, vystačí si jen s a to i horší kvality. Je dlouhověký, plodný a bez problémů se telí. je vysoká a krávy je možno využít jako krávy kojné k odchovu dvou telat. (cs)
