- Epigenes of Sicyon (Greek: Ἐπιγένης ὁ Σικυώνιος) was an Ancient Greek tragic poet. He has been confounded by some with his namesake, the comic poet. He is mentioned by Suidas as the most ancient writer of tragedy. By the word "tragedy" here we can understand only the old dithyrambic and satyrical tragôidia, into which it is possible that Epigenes may have been the first to introduce other subjects than the original one of the fortunes of origin, if at least we may trust the account which we find in Apostolius, Photius, and Suidas, of the origin of the proverb ouden pros ton Dtonuson. This would clearly be one of the earliest steps in the gradual transformation of the old dithyrambic performance into the dramatic tragedy of later times, and may tend to justify the statement which ascribes t (en)

| - Epígenes de Sició (en llatí Epigenes, en grec antic Ἐπιγέτης) fou un poeta còmic grec que menciona Suides del que diu que era el més antic escriptor de tragèdies. De vegades se l'ha confós amb Epígenes d'Atenes. Amb la paraula "tragèdia" (τραγῳδία), només es pot entendre l'antiga tragèdia ditiràmbica i satírica, on és possible que Epígenes hagués estat el primer en introduir algunes modificacions i temes nous. Existeixen els testimonis de Miquel Apostoli, Foci i Suides que diuen que Epígenes va donar lloc a la dita οὐδὲν πρὸς τὸν Διόνυσον ("res després de Dionís"), cosa que indicaria que va donar els primers passos en la transformació de l'antiga actuació de la lírica coral cantada a Dionís en la tragèdia dramàtica dels temps posteriors. La seva època és desconeguda, i el tema ja era dubtós per Suides, que diu que va ser el vuitè autor abans que Tespis, encara que també diu que es deia que el va precedir molt poc en el temps. (ca)

Μπορούμε να εικάσουμε ότι ο Επιγένης ήταν από τους πρωτοπόρους εκείνους ποιητές που τόλμησαν να εισαγάγουν στους διθυράμβους, που ψαλλόταν προς τιμήν του Διονύσου, μύθους και ιστορίες και για άλλα μυθολογικά πρόσωπα. Οι καινοτομίες αυτές σίγουρα δεν γινόταν θετικά δεκτές πάντοτε από το κοινό. Έτσι, σύμφωνα με την Σούδα, όταν κάποτε παίχθηκε μια τραγωδία του Επιγένους αφιερωμένη στο θεό Διόνυσο, στην οποία όμως παρεμβάλλονταν μύθοι και για άλλους θεούς, "φωνάχτηκε" για πρώτη φορά από τους θεατές η φράση Οὐδὲν πρὸς τὸν Διόνυσον [Αυτό δεν έχει καμιά σχέση με τον Διόνυσο], που έμελλε να καταστεί παροιμιώδης και λεγόταν, όπως μας πληροφορεί ο παροιμιογράφος Ζηνόβιος, όταν κάποιος αγόρευε εκτός θέματος,.
