The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) was launched as a 3-year project supported by the LIFE+ Programme of the European Commission until July 2012. It continues taking place in the following years. The 2012 edition of the EWWR took place from 17 to 25 November 2012 under the patronage of Mr Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment. It aims to organize multiple actions during a single week, across Europe, that will raise awareness about waste reduction. Each year, the most outstanding actions are rewarded during an awards ceremony in Brussels at the heart of the European institutions. Since the beginning of the project, more than 20.000 awareness raising actions on waste prevention have been implemented in the framework of the EWWR.

- La settimana europea per la riduzione dei rifiuti(SERR) è un'iniziativa di sensibilizzazione sul tema della riduzione dei rifiuti nata nell'ambito del (Settore informazione e comunicazione) della Commissione europea. Consiste in un'elaborata campagna di comunicazione ambientale che si concentra nell'arco di una settimana e che incoraggia cittadini, enti pubblici, associazioni e imprese a proporre, mettere in atto e divulgare azioni concrete e buone pratiche per la riduzione dei rifiuti. Le azioni ritenute più meritevoli, una per ogni categoria di action developer (enti pubblici, associazioni e ONG, imprese, scuole, altro) vengono poi premiate nel corso della cerimonia europea di premiazione per la riduzione dei rifiuti che si svolge a Bruxelles. The five partners of this project are:
* ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency – project coordinator)
* ACR+ (the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and sustainable Resource management – project technical secretariat)
* ARC (the Catalan Waste Agency)
* IBGE (Brussels Environment, public administration for the environment and energy) and
* LIPOR (the Intermunicipal Waste Management Service of Greater Porto). (en)

La SERR si propone non solo di contribuire concretamente alla riduzione della quantità di rifiuti prodotti, ma anche di portare la problematica dei rifiuti all'attenzione del pubblico e di accrescere la consapevolezza dei cittadini in merito alle possibili strategie di riduzione e alle politiche europee e nazionali messe in campo a tale scopo . A questo proposito l’Unione europea stabilisce un ordine di priorità noto come gerarchia dei rifiuti da applicare in sede di definizione di eventuali misure di prevenzione e gestione dei rifiuti. La SERR fa propria tale gerarchia attraverso il principio delle “3 R” il quale indica nella riduzione dei rifiuti alla fonte la strategia prioritaria, seguita dal riutilizzo dei prodotti e infine dal riciclo quale ultima opzione .
